Elisa Azzopardi Conquers the Restonica Trail 69km by UTMB in Her Toughest Race Yet![]()
Maltese and Agones Sfc trail runner Elisa Azzopardi has achieved one of the most significant milestones of her running career, successfully completing the Restonica Trail by UTMB in Corsica—a gruelling 69-kilometre mountain race featuring an incredible 4,000 metres of elevation gain.![]()
For Azzopardi, simply standing on the start line of a UTMB event represented the fulfilment of a long-held dream. Crossing the finish line 18 hours later became an achievement she describes as almost impossible to process.![]()
"I’m still in shock from everything I experienced during those 18 hours on the mountain," she reflected. "Above all, I’m incredibly happy and proud that I made it through."![]()
Widely regarded as the toughest race she has ever undertaken, the Restonica Trail by UTMB follows one of the most demanding sections of the legendary GR20 route in Corsica, renowned as one of Europe's most challenging long-distance hiking trails. The event lived up to its formidable reputation, with highly technical terrain, relentless climbs and descents, and unforgiving cut-off times testing every competitor's physical and mental resilience.![]()
Much of the course demanded skills beyond traditional trail running. More than half of the route resembled mountaineering, requiring athletes to scramble over massive boulders, descend ladders, grip safety chains, and carefully place every step across exposed and rugged mountain terrain.![]()
The race also served as a humbling reminder of the power of nature. Throughout the event, competitors witnessed rescue helicopters responding to emergencies, including one incident that unfolded directly in front of Azzopardi, highlighting both the dangers of the course and the importance of respecting the mountains.![]()
Adding another layer of difficulty, organisers were forced to make a last-minute schedule change after severe weather was forecast. Less than 24 hours before the start, the race was brought forward from 4:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., requiring runners to quickly adapt their preparations.![]()
Despite the unexpected challenge, Azzopardi's months of disciplined training, countless early mornings, personal sacrifices, and time spent away from her family ultimately paid off.
Joseph Azzopardi also took part in the 17km event finishing in a very respectable time. ![]()
